FAQ's

What is Acupuncture?

As a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into key points on the body.

These techniques are used to heal illness and injury and to prevent disease. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that Chi or universal energy flows through the human body as well as through all aspects of nature.

When this energy is blocked, weakened, stagnating or reversed, a variety of disease states can arise. Acupuncture works by helping to restore the proper flow of Chi to certain regions of the body helping resolve disease, ease pain and promote wellness.

What conditions can be treated with Acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be useful in treating a variety of medical conditions such as muscle & joint disorders(sports injuries, neck & back pain, joint pain, tendinitis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow), digestive disorders(constipation, bloating, nausea & vomiting), respiratory disorders (bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis, allergies), as well as urinary, menstrual & reproductive disorders.

Acupuncture can help raise and maintain one's over all energy level, prevent illness and ease tension and stress.

What results can be expected?

People respond differently to acupuncture. Many patients are very reactive to treatment and see quick changes in their condition after just 2 or 3 sessions.

Other patients see more of a gradual change over a longer course of treatment. The amount of treatments needed is often related to the complexity of the problem and the length of time the problem has existed.

A new problem may be affected by a shorter course of treatment, where as a more chronic condition may require a greater number of treatment in order to see lasting results.

Does Acupuncture have side effects?

Usually, Acupuncture is received with little or no side effects. It is common for patients to feel a deep sense of relaxation after a treatment.

At times this is accompanied by a feeling of fatigued which usually passes quickly with rest. Occasionally, symptoms may seem to worsen temporarily after treatment-this is generally an indication that the treatment is affecting their condition and is often a good predictor Acupuncture will have a positive effect on your symptoms.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a therapy practiced in Traditional Chinese Medicine. For this treatment modality Mug wort Herb is processed into a variety of forms. It is then burned to warm Acupuncture points, relax tight muscles, and relieve pain.

In some cases the herb is processed into a stick which can then be burned much like a stick of incense, and held over certain points on the body as a form of indirect treatment. In other cases a more direct form of Moxa is used in the form of tiny threads which are then placed over a light cream directly on the body. In either case the treatments are comfortable, warming, and relaxing.

Cupping

Cupping is a therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine that is often found in other regions of the world. It involves placing glass cups tightly on the skin through the use of suction. The cups help to release stagnant fluids such as blood and lymph thereby improving the flow of energy throughout the body.

Cups are commonly used for respiratory problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and the common cold. In addition cups can be used to release muscular tension in the back, shoulders and neck. Although the treatment can sometimes leave a temporary mark resembling a bruise, the process is relaxing and comfortable.
